Ready for a fantastic kitchen makeover this year?
Kitchen remodels and redesigns are some of the most inspiring and fun improvement and renovation projects.
This is easily one of, if not the most important room in a house. A great kitchen is a source of pride to show off, a work of art, the heart of a home, and literally feeds and fuels everything else you do in life. As such, kitchen remodels can be one of the best investments. No matter whether it is just for you, for entertaining, in a rental property, or with an eye on selling your property in the future.
However, a lot is changing this year. This is not something you will do every day. So, before you start digging into yours, be sure you know what’s in and out this year.
Kitchen Makeovers
Kitchen makeovers can be easy and inexpensive, or major overhauls.
You can do a lot with a few minor touch ups and upgrades. Though a complete gut renovation can also give you a stunning new feature room you’ll be excited for everyone to see, and to spend more time in yourself.
Give some thought to what you want this makeover to do for you. Is it that you just can’t stand your current outdated and poorly functional space? Have your needs grown? Or did you buy something you already knew needed a makeover, or you want to really wow potential buyers and get the most money for your home in a fast home sale later?
What NOT To Do With Your Kitchen This Year
Let’s start with the big fashion mistakes you do not want to make this year.
There are some huge kitchen trend shifts happening. The last thing you want is to invest heavily in a complete kitchen remodel, and then realize you sunk all of your money into something no one wants in their home any more. Then be stuck with it for another five years.
Here is what’s out…
All White Kitchens Are Out
Say goodbye to all white kitchens. If you weren’t planning to replace your kitchen island and cabinet in the process, at least consider repainting or refinishing them if you can.
Matte Black Appliances Are Out
Don’t bring in the black appliances. They’ve definitely had their moment. Things are looking much more colorful this year.
Open Floor Plans Are Out
At least according to many interior designers, open floor plans are out. They have been in for quite a while now. While quite functional, it appears that the kitchen, dining, and all rooms and functions around entertaining, eating, and drinking are becoming a little more refined and gentrified this year.
Of course, if the open plan does work better for you, or you are working with a small square footage home, then you may not want to go through the hassle and expense of closing in a room you’ve already opened up.
Upper Cabinets Are Out
Don’t waste money on redoing or ordering new upper cabinets in the kitchen. They are no longer in style. This can be a great relief and area to save in for those not loving their existing kitchen cabinetry. Even above the range appliances are out. This year is all about shelves instead.
2023 Kitchen Trends
Now, here is what is coming into style for 2023 and beyond…
Appliances
Colorful appliances are in. Colored ranges and colored refrigerators are especially on trend. Just be careful not to choose anything too gaudy or obnoxious if you hope to sell your home in the near future.
This is a great time to invest in more energy efficient appliances to offset the rapid increase in energy costs. This may also be especially important for investment business and corporate housing owners that need to watch their ESG scores.
Slab Backsplashes
Stay away from herringbone patterns. Expect those to be a pet peeve of interior designers and real estate agents this year.
Some are trying to promote wallpaper backsplashes. Though that seems to make no sense at all. At least unless you vow never to use your kitchen.
Instead opt for full slab backsplashes.
Woods
Wood is in.
You may want to check out interesting natural wood shapes for kitchen islands and tables. Consider live edge wood shelves instead of upper cabinetry.
Wood is now recognized as perhaps the most sustainable and eco friendly material to be used in construction in general.
If you still feel conscious about deforestation, source yours locally. Or offset your impact by choosing an eco-friendly vacation this year, and do some tree planting while you are traveling.
Handmade Artisanal Items
This is a great year to find unique items for your kitchen decor. You can have fun vintage shopping and going to auctions. Or source them from sustainable and conscious businesses that are having a positive impact on the world.
Kitchen Islands
Oversized kitchen islands are no longer in style.
Instead you may consider modest sized colored islands, or multiple smaller islands. In fact, most interior designers now seem to be favoring eat in style dining tables with chairs instead of islands at all.
Opulence In Layout
It seems that we are going through a little bit of a throw back phase when it comes to layouts and floor plans.
Think closed in, separate butler pantries, designated bar areas, and upgraded wet bars. As well as closed in kitchens and dining rooms, in sharp contrast to old open floor plans.
Working Kitchens
Remote work and home school are huge macro trends that are impacting how kitchens are used. You may want to be sure to include space to conveniently work on laptops and your other devices within the realm of the kitchen.
Colors
This year is all about earthy tones. Gray and beige are most prominent. With pink, reddish, and blue matte tones to compliment them.
