Coastal Retreat

A home shaped by the horizon.

Perched above the La Jolla cliffs, this home was designed around a single discipline: get out of the way. The Pacific horizon demanded nothing less than full deference—every decision made in service of the view, never in competition with it.

The living room establishes the tone: a linear fireplace, a restrained palette of cream and natural stone, and wide glass sliders that dissolve the threshold between interior and open air. The ocean is not a feature here. It is the room.

Materials & Light

Nothing competes with the view.

White blended quartz, Italian custom cabinets finished in a beautiful soft colored wood, and a restrained use of black as punctuation rather than statement. Every surface was chosen to recede—to hold light softly and let the Pacific do the talking. The water beyond the glass is not a backdrop. It is the room's reason for being.

Materials earn their place here through longevity and quiet presence, not novelty. The result is a space that feels unhurried at any hour—morning light, midday glare, amber dusk.

Design perspective

“The ocean was always the client. We simply arranged the room around it.”

Made for a life lived in the open.

The primary suite distills the home's philosophy to its quietest expression. An all-cream palette, a diptych that rewards stillness, and light that moves through the room from pale morning to amber dusk without a single harsh edge. Nothing competes. Nothing distracts.

Throughout, materials were selected not for their visual weight but for their capacity to recede—plaster that holds a soft shadow, timber that deepens with age, textiles with just enough texture to register as intentional. The restraint is the design. A home that grows more itself with every season lived in it.
